According to the Los Angeles Times, O.J. Simpson was awarded full custody of the children he shared with his late ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson in December 1996. It had been a little over a year since he had been found not guilty of murdering Nicole and Ron Goldman. During that time, Sydney (11) and Justin Simpson (8) had been living with Nicole's parents. Louis and Juditha Brown fought a legal battle against the father of their grandchildren.
The two murders were followed by a highly publicized trial, which might have suggested that a life with O.J. could be chaotic. However, the courts usually side with parents whenever they can. The Browns were granted visitation rights and issued a statement saying, "We love Sydney and Justin and pray for their safety and well-being as they return to their father." On April 10, 2024, Simpson passed away at the age of 76 from prostate cancer. A source told the Daily Mail that only one close family member was with Simpson when he died despite initial reports suggesting he was surrounded by friends and family. Less than two weeks later, the outlet spotted 38-year-old Sydney outside of the two-bedroom apartment in St. Petersburg, Fla., where she lives. She was carrying a car seat although no one has confirmed whether or not she has children.
Upon knocking on her door, the Daily Mail was met by a man who claimed Sydney wasn't home. Before this encounter, the Daily Mail snagged photos of Sydney and her father spending time together on Thanksgiving 2018. Along with her brother Justin, they were hanging out at a "waterfront seafood bar and grill in Tierra Verde, just outside St. Petersburg."
Simpson had just been paroled in July 2017 and need permission from the Department of Corrections in Nevada to make the trip to Florida. The outlet reported that Justin was working as a real estate agent at the time, and Sydney was working as a property manage while also owning several properties herself.
In February 2022, Justin announced via an Instagram post that he and his partner were going to be parents. They planned on naming their little girl Lana who was due to be born May 3, 2023. Beneath a photo of the happy couple as well as a sonogram, Justin wrote, "We are extremely excited, scared, nervous, and in love." They also included a link to a baby registry, which as of the time of this writing is still active.
Sydney and Justin were in the house the night their mother and Ron Goldman were killed.
In the early hours of June 12, 1994, Sydney and Justin were removed from the Brentwood home where they lived. The bodies of their mother and Ron Goldman were in front of the house, thus rendering it a crime scene. The kids were shielded from what was going on, and had no clue what happened when they arrived at the police station.
Because of this, the Seattle Times reported that Sydney made a frantic call to the house looking for her mother. Obviously, she wasn't able to reach Nicole so Sydney left a heartbroken message on their answering machine that came to light during their father's trial. "Please answer, Mommy! Please answer!" said the terrified child. "Mommy, please call me back! I want to know what happened last night." She demanded to know why they were brought to the police station.
The children were eventually picked up and brought to the home of Nicole Brown Simpson's parents. While there, Juditha Brown told them what happened, per People. All she could say was, "Mommy's in heaven." Simpson was arrested and charged with the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman a mere five days later.
