Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is leading his team to Super Bowl LVIII, where a win would get him a third ring. This will be his fourth time at the biggest game in the NFL, so it's safe to assume he has a lot on his mind. Unfortunately, days before the final showdown of the season, Patrick's father was charged with a DWI in Texas.
Patrick Mahomes's parents are divorced and his mother has stayed quiet about her ex-husband's latest arrest. Here's what we know about his parents and the incident.
Patrick Mahomes's parents have been divorced since 2006.
Patrick's mother Randi Mahomes runs a website that promises to help fans "learn Patrick's history through his mother's eyes." In her bio, she briefly touches on why she and Patrick's father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., divorced. In his younger days, Mahomes Sr. was a professional baseball pitcher who at one time played for the Twins, Red Sox, and the Mets. Randi met Patrick's father after high school and had no idea he would eventually have a career as a Major League Baseball pitcher.
"Married life with a professional baseball player is a hard life and took a toll on their relationship which led to divorce," she wrote. Despite the separation, Randi said the two remain friendly. The exes are frequently spotted at Patrick's games where they are often joined by his siblings, including his brother Jackson Mahomes and his half-sisters Zoe Mahomes and Mia Randall. Randi had Mia after she separated from Patrick's father. Likewise, Mahomes Sr. had his daughter Zoe after he got divorced from Randi.
According to Sports Illustrated's FanNation, Mahomes Sr.'s professional baseball career lasted from 1991 until about 2000. For the next three years, he played on minor league teams until he retired in 2009. Randi's post-divorce life took a different turn from her husband's as she threw herself completely into event planning and being an incredible hype mom to her three kids. And while Randi also focuses on her strong connection to God, Mahomes Sr. has been struggling.
Patrick Mahomes's father was arrested in February 2024 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Mahomes Sr. was arrested on Feb. 3, 2024, in Tyler, Texas, and was charged with driving while intoxicated, per PEOPLE Magazine. He was released on a $10,000 bond. Daily Mail reported that his bond conditions haven't barred him from traveling out of state, so Mahomes Sr. will be able to attend Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas.
However, his bond conditions do prohibit him from drinking alcohol or taking any illegal drugs. Mahomes Sr. will be required to have an ignition interlock on his vehicle, which means he will have to pass a breathalyzer test to start the vehicle. He will also be subject to random alcohol and drug tests while on bond. He doesn't have a set court date yet.
Jail Records from Smith County in Texas, where Mahomes Sr. was detained, show a slew of arrests dating back to January 2002 when he was arrested for disorderly conduct. Since then, Mahomes Sr. has been taken into custody three times for non-payment of child support and has been caught driving while intoxicated five times prior to his 2024 arrest.
Smith County, Texas court records obtained by NBC News state that Mahomes Sr. was "sentenced to 40 days of jail time that would be served on weekends," after a 2019 DWI conviction. If Mahomes Sr. is found guilty of the February 2024 DWI arrest, he could face up to 10 years in prison, per Click 2 Houston.
