Celine Dion Perseveres to This Day Through Her Rare Neurological Disease — How Is She Now?

Even some of the most popular and successful musicians in the world struggle to come close to racking up the accomplishments that Celine Dion has achieved throughout her career. Having sold over 200 million records worldwide since the start of her career in 1980, she's gone down in history as one of the most successful and best-selling musical artists of all time. For several years between the late 1990s and early 2000s, she was even the highest-paid female musician in the world.

Her music continues to make an impact. During 2020, an infamously slow year for public performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was still one of the highest-paid musicians of the year having earned $17.5 million, according to Billboard. Few things short of a global pandemic would stop Celine Dion from continuing to perform for people, but she has taken a step back for the last few years due to major health issues. How is she doing now? Here's what Celine Dion is currently up to.

In January 2022, Celine Dion made a public statement on social media in which she canceled several planned concert dates between March and April of that year. Later that December, she revealed the cause of her cancellations.

During that time, Celine was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that causes chronic pain and spasms that would prevent her from performing at her fullest. She continues to battle the disease to this day.

A Prime Video documentary released on June 25, 2024, entitled I Am: Celine Dion, offered a harrowing glimpse into her ongoing struggle with stiff-person syndrome. Toward the end of the film, Celine is shown having a seizure in which she is rendered motionless with facial twitches. Reportedly, Celine herself had asked that the footage be kept in the documentary in order to raise awareness of the condition.

That said, she continues to be active today, albeit on a lower scale. Though she avoided major public performances since her diagnosis, she continues to make smaller public appearances that maintain her level of stardom. On June 22 according to PEOPLE Magazine, Celine appeared with her kids at the Wynn Las Vegas' Encore Theater to attend a Hauser concert and even meet with the cellist in person. She's also done press interviews promoting the Prime Video doc and describing her episodes with stiff-person syndrome.

However, she's made no secret of the fact that she misses performing. In her documentary, she admitted to how hard it was for her to cancel her shows and how much effort she's putting into returning to the stage.

"If I can't run, I'll walk," she says in the doc. "If I can't walk, I'll crawl. But I won't stop."

As for her living situation, she reportedly downgraded from a 31,000-square-foot mansion to a more humble $1.2 million Las Vegas Mansion according to Mansion Global.
